Hello all! I have an idea for a clothing line for women size 14 - 26 using really beautiful, expensive fabrics, couture finishing techniques, and hand embellishments. Thinner women in urban centers have tons of private labels and boutiques with this stuff, and the expendable income to buy a $300 top - see any high end fashion magazine.
So my question is Do fat women want to spend money on clothes that are highly fashionable, sumptuous, unique and well made? Are fat women hired in positions where they make enough expendable income to merit these purchases, or are they routinely not hired in creative professional fields where this clothing would be appropriate? Is there a market interest?
Any feedback, public or private would be highly appreciated. Thanks! - Eden
p.s. - please do not take offense at the word "fat". I'd prefer not to be euphemistic, and I'm not targeting women who are a size 6 but with big breasts and hips. Plus, I'm a fat girl m'self.

Re: Do Fat Women Buy Expensive Clothes? An Informal Survey
Sun, June 26, 2005 - 1:28 PMYes, if we have the means fat women buy just as much pricey stuff as the stick chicks. On a recent trip to San Fran I went to a plus sized store called Harper greer, look at their website. They make most of their own clothing. The patterns are fab, the fit is amazing. PLUS!!!! I was a medium in their store!!!! I will shop there anytime I am in SF just to be a medium. Anywho, their stuff is very pricey but the cuts and fabrics are sublime. Good luck with your endeavor, keep me informed. I love to shop!!!

Good luck! -

Re: Do Fat Women Buy Expensive Clothes? An Informal Survey
Tue, June 13, 2006 - 2:20 PMHi:
Yes, we do! I am fortunate enough to know where the local Jones Outlet and Factory Finale are, and I have purchased quite a few suits from them. I like their cut, and at the high (and much richer point) of my career, I have purchased $500 suits. It is worth it when the style is classic and FITS. The trendy stuff I either stay away from, or set a price limit (no more than $50 for anything that won't last two seasons). Quality and fit are everything!
I work in high tech. My sister, also plus sized, an engineer, and now a director general for the Canadian Government would tell you that size shouldn't mean anything, but I know that all the little muffins around her are an indication of the trend (smaller is BETTER in WOMEN! Ha! As if I believe that!).
So yes, you can make enough money to dress well, as long as you are willing to go for the classics, but at heart, we all want a bargain. That is why we continue to search for the ultimate t-shirt, the perfect bra, and jeans that don't ride up, slither down, or feel like a steel girdle.
Cheers!

Re: Do Fat Women Buy Expensive Clothes? An Informal Survey
Wed, June 14, 2006 - 2:18 PMEven on a sometimes limited budget, I would agree that I gladly spend more money on classic fit and style. The problem these days is finding the quality you're willing to pay more to get! Many of the companies who claim to offer large size fashions are often guilty of not offering Quality fabrications--read feels like wearing a trashbag vacum sealed to your skin--and sizing that takes a wrong turn at vanity sizing by continuing to offer plus sizes fit to smaller and smaller fit models! As a seamstress, a woman in my mid thirties and a retirement professional, I avoid trendy except for the most basic of items and I never pay full price for those items. However, even a sewer likes to put herself in the hands of someone else to cater to, so if you can find even one specialty boutique that caters to high end merchandise in your size (for me I have to drive 2 hours to do that), I highly recommend the experience! If you really are on a tight budget, you might consider consignment as well. Quality goods, even at used prices can still be a very good bet! And as always, if you buy quality but need to tweek the fit, don't be afraid to find a seamstress or alterations specialist to help you, you'll find it's well worth it. Just assume a certain amount of added cost into what you're willing to pay for the item. Take care of them and quality fashions will serve you for a very long time, and a flattering fit NEVER goes out of style..

Fri, November 24, 2006 - 2:52 PMthere is a market interest, look at Svoboda for instance.
www.igigi.com is a great place to start looking for things as well, however our things are rather mid priced I think.
